Key findings from our 2026 data
- Nine states levy no income tax on wages — Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming — so workers there keep the entire state share of every paycheck.
- On a $75,000 salary, annual take-home ranges from $61,593 in Alaska down to $55,604 in Oregon — a spread of about $5,989 driven purely by where you live.
- Federal income tax, Social Security (6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base), and Medicare (1.45%) are identical in every state; the entire take-home difference comes from state income tax.
Methodology
Figures are computed for a single filer taking the standard deduction, using 2026 federal tax brackets (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32), the $184,500 Social Security wage base, and each state's enacted 2026 income tax schedule. They exclude local income taxes, 401(k) and other pre-tax deductions, tax credits, and non-wage income — so treat them as a clean state-to-state comparison rather than a personal tax estimate. Recomputed whenever a rate changes.
