Methodology

  • Federal tax calculated from 2026 IRS brackets (Rev. Proc. 2025-32) and the $16,100 single-filer standard deduction enacted under the OBBB Act.
  • State tax uses the 2026 rate schedule for each state, flat, progressive, or none, sourced from each state's department of revenue and cross-checked against the Tax Foundation's 2026 published tables.
  • FICA = Social Security 6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base + Medicare 1.45% + Additional Medicare 0.9% on income above $200,000 (single).
  • Filing status: single. Married-filing-jointly and head-of-household figures are available in our individual state paycheck calculators.
  • Excluded: Pre-tax deductions (401k, HSA, FSA), local/city taxes (NYC, Philadelphia, San Francisco), state-specific credits, and personal exemptions are not applied, kept simple for cross-state comparability.
  • Update cadence: Re-verified each January when new tax-year data is published, plus mid-year updates whenever a state changes rates (e.g., Arkansas dropped to 3.7% in May 2026 retroactive to January).
