Quick reference: cooking & kitchen volumes
Most volume searches come from recipes, converting US cups, tablespoons, and fluid ounces to milliliters and liters. The kitchen values, worked out (US measures):
| US measure | Milliliters | Fluid oz |
|---|---|---|
| 1 teaspoon | 4.9 mL | 0.17 fl oz |
| 1 tablespoon | 14.8 mL | 0.5 fl oz |
| ¼ cup | 59 mL | 2 fl oz |
| 1 cup | 236.6 mL | 8 fl oz |
| 1 pint | 473 mL | 16 fl oz |
| 1 quart | 946 mL | 32 fl oz |
| 1 gallon | 3,785 mL | 128 fl oz |
Outside the US, recipes use the metric tablespoon (15 mL) and teaspoon (5 mL), and a 250 mL metric cup. Check which standard your recipe assumes.
How to convert volume units by hand
- Gallons → liters: multiply by 3.78541. Example: 15 gal × 3.78541 = 56.8 L.
- Liters → gallons: multiply by 0.264172. Example: 50 L × 0.264172 = 13.2 gal.
- Cups → milliliters: multiply by 236.6 (US). Example: 2 cups × 236.6 = 473 mL.
- Fluid ounces → milliliters: multiply by 29.5735. Example: 12 fl oz × 29.5735 = 354.9 mL.
US and UK gallons differ by about 20% (1 US gal = 3.785 L; 1 UK gal = 4.546 L), so always confirm which gallon a figure refers to. The converter above works in liters, milliliters, US gallons, quarts, pints, cups, and fluid ounces.
FAQs
How many ounces in a gallon?
1 US gallon equals 128 fluid ounces. 1 US quart = 32 fl oz. 1 US pint = 16 fl oz. 1 US cup = 8 fl oz. Note: US fluid ounces differ slightly from UK/Imperial fluid ounces, 1 US gallon = 133.23 UK fl oz.
What's the difference between US and UK gallons?
Big difference. 1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters. 1 UK (Imperial) gallon = 4.54609 liters, about 20% larger. UK fluid ounces are also slightly larger. Always specify which gallon when converting.
