FAQs

How is Little League age calculated?

Little League uses an August 31 cutoff. A player's 'League Age' is their age on August 31 of the season's year. Example: if a player turns 12 on September 15, 2026, their 2026 League Age is still 11 (they were 11 on August 31). This cutoff was permanently set by Little League International in 2018 (previously April 30).

What are the Little League divisions?

Major: Ages 10-12 (some leagues allow 9-12). Intermediate (50/70): Ages 11-13. Junior: Ages 12-14. Senior: Ages 13-16. Minor: Ages 7-12. Tee Ball: Ages 4-6. Coach Pitch: Ages 5-8. Division eligibility uses your league age (the age you were on August 31).

Why did Little League change the cutoff date?

In 2018, Little League moved the cutoff from April 30 to August 31. The change aligned Little League with most other youth sports and prevented a player from 'aging out' mid-season. The change took several years to phase in fully.

What age can my child play Little League?

Little League offers divisions for ages 4-16. Tee Ball starts at age 4. The most well-known division (Major Little League — featured in the Little League World Series) is for ages 10-12 with league age cutoff August 31. Each local league sets its specific division offerings.

Can a 13-year-old play Little League?

Yes — in Intermediate (50/70), Junior, or Senior divisions. Little League Baseball is offered through age 16 in Senior Division. Some leagues call older divisions 'Babe Ruth' or 'PONY' — those are different organizations with similar age structures.

How does the Little League World Series age work?

The Little League World Series is for the Major Division (ages 10-12, league age). Players must have a league age of 10, 11, or 12 on August 31 of the tournament year. A 12-year-old who turns 13 in September is still eligible for that summer's LLWS because their league age was still 12 on August 31.

Where can I find official Little League rules?

Visit littleleague.org for official rules, eligibility, and division definitions. Local leagues may add restrictions but cannot expand beyond the international cutoffs. The Age Determination Date is published annually but has been August 31 since 2018.

What about other youth baseball organizations?

Cal Ripken, Babe Ruth, USSSA, AAU, and PONY all use slightly different cutoff dates. Most use April 30 or May 1, which is why a player can be a different 'age' depending on the league. Check your specific organization's rules before assuming Little League age applies.
